Pests & Diseases
of the
Avocado
Avocado cultivation faces significant challenges from pests and diseases that can affect productivity and fruit quality. Infections by fungi, viruses and bacteria, as well as the presence of insects, can cause serious damage, reducing yields and degrading the commercial value of the fruit.
Pests & Diseases
The main diseases affecting avocado cultivation include:
- SunBlotch: Caused by Avocado sunblotch viroid (ASBVd). Symptoms include reddish, yellow, or white streaks on branches and stems, spots on fruit, and cracks in the bark. The disease can reduce yields by more than 20%.
- Phytophthora in Avocado: Phytophthora (Phytophthora cinnamomi) is one of the most destructive fungal pathogens in avocado cultivation. It causes a root rot disease, known as "Phytophthora root rot", which attacks the root system of trees, reducing their ability to absorb water and nutrients. Symptoms include yellowing of the leaves, reduced growth, drying of the tips of the branches and, eventually, total drying of the tree. The disease is favored by wet and poorly drained soils, while its treatment includes the use of resistant rootstocks, good soil drainage and the application of appropriate fungicides.
- Anthracnose: Caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Appears as light brown spots on the fruit, which darken and sink as the fruit ripens, leading to wet rot.
- Thrips (Thysanoptera): Small insects that cause damage to leaves and fruits, reducing the quality of production.
- Avocado Flea (Trioza anceps): Sucks the juices from the leaves, causing curling and weakening of the plants.
- Coccus (Coccus hesperidum, Pseudococcus spp.): Insects that secrete honeydew, favoring the development of sooty mold.
- Lepidoptera (Stenoma catenifer): Larvae that feed on the fruit, reducing its commercial value.
- Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata): Lays eggs on the fruit, leading to rot and fall.
- Avocado spider mite (Oligonychus perseae): A mite that feeds mainly on the lower surface of leaves, creating brown necrotic spots and, in large populations, can cause leaf and fruit drop.
- Avocado brown mite (Oligonychus punicae): A mite that feeds on the epidermis of the leaves, causing discoloration and a reduction in the tree's photosynthetic capacity.
- Earwig: An insect whose adults feed on the foliage and buds of avocados, while the larvae feed on roots and root hairs, making young trees vulnerable to soil-borne pathogens and drought.
